What is a Group Stage?

A group stage splits a tournament into small groups. Teams play inside their group, and the top sides advance.

Most groups are a round robin. The clubs that finish in the qualifying places move into the knockout stage. Points, goal difference and head-to-head split sides that finish level on points.
